The Kogler Berg (also written Koglerberg ) is 819  m above sea level. A. high mountain on the northern edge of the Alps near Oberhofen am Irrsee in Upper Austria .

Location and landscape

The mountain is a gentle knoll that rises northeast over the Irrsee . It belongs to the Mondsee Flysch Mountains of the Salzkammergut Mountains and, together with the Schoibernberg ( 883  m above sea level ), forms the north-western subgroup of the mountains between Irrsee / Mondsee and Attersee , from which they are separated by the uppermost Vöckla in the east. There on the other side is the Rehberg (Die Röten) ( 819  m above sea level ).

At the Kogler Berg, the Alps end orographically, and the Hausruck-und-Kobernaußerwald-Zug follows north as part of the Alpine foothills . Its mountain foot runs out into the plateau zone Hochfeld and forms the gate landscape between Straßwalchen , about 6 kilometers northwest, and Frankenmarkt , 7½ kilometers northeast. This forms the watershed between Mattig , which flows into the Inn , and the Vöckla zur Traun . The Oberhofner Bach (Mühlbach) goes to the west towards Straßwalchen. The Haselbach , which forms the valley to the Schoibernberg, drains to the south , and the Reitzingbach to the north , which then goes together as the Nössenbach to the Vöckla. The watershed to the north is interlocked in many ways through Weinbach (Vöckla), Hainbach (Mattig), Kirchhamer Bach (Vöckla) and then the Schwemmbach (Mattig) - already in the Kobernaußerwald .

The larger towns around the mountain are Oberhofen to the west and Laiter am Irrsee to the southwest. The Salzburg state border, which bulges eastwards around Straßwalchen, passes northeast at Winzerroid near Oberhofen via Pölzleiten and Oberholz , the latter places belong to the Straßwalchener Hüttenedt an der Vöckla.

Surname

When Georg Matthäus Vischer 1667 is perhaps the place here Rabenshwenthner Huet , well after the local situation Rabenschwand in Oberhofen.

It got its current name from the location of Kogl am Fuß above Oberhofen, which itself probably got its name from the mountain: Kogel is a typical local name for conical crests and peaks.

geology

The mountain belongs to the cement marl series ( Coniacium - Campanium , middle Upper Cretaceous, approx. 90-70 million years old) of the flysch zone , south of the Schoibernberg lies the Altlengbach Formation ( Maastrichtian - Thanetian , Wende Kreide / Palaeocene, 70-50 million years) . This tectonic discordance leads in a straight line to Straß im Attergau and is one of several on the northern edge of the Mondsee – Attersee-Flysch Mountains. You can also find it at Irrsberg on the other side of the Irrsee. At the north foot by the Wiesel Chapel eastward, a strip of the Reiselsberg Formation and Gaultflysch (Lower Cretaceous to Lower Upper Cretaceous) is exposed, which continues as a frame for the ultra-Helvetic window on the Stoifelbach .

The Mondseeland was furrowed by a tongue of the Dachstein glacier, whose terminal moraines lie on the Krenwald and Kobernaußerwald. In the Mindel (around 450,000 years ago) and Riss ice ages (around 200,000 years ago), Koglerberg – Schoibernberg and Irrsberg were typical nunataks , rock islands protruding from the ice mass. Throughout the western foot along at about 500- 650  m above sea level. A. run the younger Riss edge moraine of the Irrseegletscher, north at about 700  m at Hub the higher Mindel moraine. The hydrographic conditions to the north are the result of the runoff development in the marshy or seay glacier foreland during the retreat times .

The mountain is easy to climb from all sides on various forest trails and climbs. The summit is forested.
