Geology and landscape

The Stadlberg is a sub-plateau of the Irrsberg, about 40 meters above the valley floor. It is separated from the Irrsberg to the south and east by dry ditches that go to the Pfongauer Bach and the Hainbach , respectively , with the pass in between at the Hubertus Chapel . It forms the southern deck of the Straßwalchen gate landscape between the Salzburg Lake District , Mattig Valley and Mondseeland .

The Stadlberg represents a ground moraine at the point where two glacier tongues from the Ice Ages met. The Wallerseegletscher came from the west as the lobe (foreland glacier tongue) of the Salzach Glacier , which has shaped the Salzburg lake area. A tongue of the Dachstein glacier , which carved out the Irrsee area , poured out from the south .

The flat, undulating moraine landscape that accompanies the entire west foot of the Kolomansberg massif is dated at Stadlberg to the Mindel glacial period (around 450,000 to 400,000 years ago). It represents the counterpart to the Krenwald as a marginal moraine wall , which stretches eastwards at the Kobernaußerwaldfuß to Frankenmarkt . A peripheral or central moraine has not been found on the Stadlberg. Around the Stadlberg lie younger crack gravel (around 200,000 years old), to which the peripheral moraine Watzlberg - Hochfeld across from the valley belongs. The Irrsberg itself is Upper Cretaceous Flysch .

Tourism and culture

The Arnoweg (stage 59 Irrsdorf - Mattsee ), which you can also walk as a valley variant of the Via Nova , leads through Großstadlberg . From the Hubertus chapel, a small forest chapel, a trail marker leads to the Irrsberg, and the one on the other side leads to the mountain route of the Via Nova and the Arnoweg on the Sommerholzer Sattel .
