The Master of Soriguerola ( Catalan Mestre de Soriguerola , Spanish Maestro de Soriguerola ) is an early Gothic painter who worked in Catalonia in the last quarter of the 13th century .

Naming

The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from the altarpiece he created for the Romanesque church of Sant Miquel in Soriguerola . Soriguerola is a small town, formerly part of the county of Cerdanya in the eastern Pyrenees, and the image that gives the master the name is now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. The picture is an altarpiece , 96.3 centimeters high and 234.5 centimeters wide and depicts the Lord's Supper on its right and the Archangel Michael at the Last Judgment on the left .

style

Other works from the former Catalan counties of Cerdany and Conflent and the Ripollès region are assigned to the master of Soriguerola by comparing styles . There the master worked in his workshop, perhaps with the help of other painters. Their common style was recognized in art history even before the master was named.

The work of the master stands at the transition between Romanesque and Gothic art in Catalan painting. Although the master is still in a locally influenced Romanesque tradition, his painting is already noticeably moving away from the Byzantine style and taking up new influences from Western European painting. The master should have known altarpieces and book illuminations from France or Italy or also paintings from Mallorca, i.e. from the entire Kingdom of Mallorca founded in 1229 , to which Catalan counties also belonged.

Art historical importance

The works ascribed to the master of Soriguerola are not only noted in the art history of the region of Catalonia, the master is seen by experts as a crossover between the Romanesque tradition and the very early Gothic style, the so-called protogothic.
