The Mecca Gate or Makai Gate in the city of Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra is one of the former 52 gates of the city. It is oriented to the west, that is, towards Mecca .

location

The Mecca Gate is located on the Kham River in the northwest of the city of Aurangabad; immediately in front of it there is a bridge over the - outside of the monsoon season - mostly dried up river.

history

The Mughal Mughal Aurangzeb (r. 1658–1707) had the city on the Deccan and later named after him expanded in the 1680s and 1690s and surrounded by a city wall to protect it from attacks by the Marathas ; 13 preserved city gates belong to this.

architecture

Like almost all buildings of Mughal architecture , the core of the 30 m wide and 10 m deep Mecca Gate consists of bricks . These were clad with precisely hewn stone or with panels. The crenellated wreath and the domes of the pavilions ( chhatris ) on the side bastions, with upturned lotus flowers and ball bars, are now painted white, but this was not always the case. The middle passage is about 6 m wide and 8 m high; above it is a battlement or a platform.
