The Melanchthon Church in Osnabrück in the Kalkhügel district was an Evangelical Lutheran church and the highest church in Osnabrück.

history

The church, named after the reformer Philipp Melanchthon , was built between 1962 and 1963 and opened on September 8, 1963.

In 2009 the first parish merger took place in the parish of Osnabrück ; the parish of the Melanchthon Church merged with the previously independent parishes of Margareten , Lukas and Luther to form the new Südstadt parish. Since the number of people attending church services in the Melanchthon Church continued to decline, it was decided to close the church site. On February 1, 2015, the East Frisian regional bishop Detlef Klahr deeded the Melanchthon Church in Osnabrück in a service. The first Evangelical Lutheran church in Osnabrück was decommissioned.

After the closure, the church building was used for a few months from March 2015 as an alternative location for the Osnabrück emma-theater ( Theater Osnabrück ), which was being renovated at that time. After that, a clothes closet for the needy was housed in the building. Since the fire protection was at risk due to ailing electrics, a new location for the clothing store had to be found, which was also achieved on the site of the former British barracks in Atter . In June 2019, the four bells of Melanchthon Church were sold for a symbolic price to an Orthodox church in Ukraine, where they will be received. The organ of the Melanchthon Church , which was built by Gebrüder Hillebrand Orgelbau , will be given to the Evangelical Lutheran Church after restoration. Resurrection Church in Bissendorf -Wissingen and replaced a much smaller instrument there. The church building is to be sold to an investor and converted into a day care facility and apartments for senior citizens.

The simple church building with a white facade and an approximately oval floor plan was built according to a design by the architect Hans Pause. The ceiling height measures around twelve meters at the highest point. The church tower is 37 meters high and carried four steel bells until 2019. The windows are by Georg Höger and Johannes Schreiter . The crucifix and the bronze plate on the pulpit were created by the sculptor Heinz Heiber . At the beginning of 2016, the church building with the bell tower was placed under monument protection.
