history

February 2, 1543 is a key date for the history of the Lutheran Church in Osnabrück. On that Marian holiday, Hermann Bonnus (1504–1548), the Lübeck city superintendent from Quakenbrück and a pupil of Martin Luther, preached in the St. Mary's Church in an evangelical manner and also donated Holy Communion in both forms, with bread and Wine. The same thing happened on February 5, 1543 in St. Katharinen. Bonnus subsequently wrote the first Lutheran church order for Osnabrück, and the Lutheran church took shape. The first superintendent was Johannes Pollius (1490–1562) from Bielefeld , who was a preacher at St. Katharinen and had meanwhile helped the Count of Tecklenburg with the introduction of the Reformation.

On January 1st, 2009 the first parish merger in the parish of Osnabrück took place. The previously independent parishes of Margareten, Melanchthon, Lukas and Luther have merged to form the new Südstadt parish.

On January 1, 2013, the parishes of Belm, Vehre, Gretesch-Lüstringen and Hasbergen came from the Georgsmarienhütte parish to the Osnabrück parish.

On January 1, 2015, the parishes of Markus and Stephanus merged to form the northwest parish.

Superintendent

Johannes Pollius, the first superintendent (painting from 1646 in St. Catherine's Church), inscription: IOHANNES POLLIVS ECCLESIA PRIMVS AVGVSTANAE CONFESSIONIS PRAEDICATOR

Since the Reformation, one of the pastors of St. Katharinen (14 in total) or St. Marien (17 in total) has always held the office of city superintendent; it is only since 2016 that the Osnabrück superintendent is no longer pastor of a parish, but has a parish pastor. The appointment was made from the start by the city's magistrate, from 1896 by the regional church regiment, later by the regional church office. The superintendent has recently been elected by the parish council (church district synod since January 1, 2020) in Osnabrück.
