Melania-Gabriela Ciot (born November 11, 1975 ) is a Romanian political scientist and politician ( PSD ). Since 2017, Ciot has held the post of State Secretary for European Affairs in the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Life

Academic career

Melania Gabriela Ciot completed her education at the Sabin Drăgoi School with a specialization in teaching in Deva . She then studied education at the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca. After that, from 1999 onwards, she worked in teacher training at the University of Oradea . In 2004 she moved to the Technical University of Cluj .

From 2002 to 2009 Ciot received his PhD in Education from the University of Ghent . In 2012 she received her PhD in International Relations and European Studies from the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca with the distinction Summa cum laudae. She also worked at the University's Faculty of European Studies and from 2017 headed the doctoral program “European Paradigm” and coordinated master’s courses in international and European management. Melania-Gabriela Ciot has published numerous academic articles and books, including more than ten books as a sole author, three books as editor and more than 30 chapters. She has also published over 50 articles in various journals.

In the course of her nomination for the office of EU Commissioner, allegations of plagiarism were raised .

Political commitment

Ciot joined the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) in 2004 . From June 2016 she was press spokeswoman for the local PSD branch in Cluj.

From May 2014 to November 2015 she worked as a European Affairs Advisor in the Cabinet of the Minister for Information Society, European Funds and Public Finance. On September 20, she was appointed State Secretary for European Affairs in the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament rejected the Romanian Government-designated Commissioner Rovana Plumb for the von der Leyen Commission in September 2019 , Ciot was re-nominated. Media reports that MEP Dan Nica was also up for discussion.

Ciot is married.
