The Rifugio Camillo Giussani or just Rifugio Giussani (German Giussani Hut ) is a refuge in the Cortina d'Ampezzo section of the Club Alpino Italiano in the Dolomites .

location

The Rifugio Camillo Giussani is located at 2,580 m in the Forcella Fontana Negra , the large yoke between the Tofana di Rozes and the Tofana di Mezzo .

history

Abandoned former Rifugio Cantore

On August 16, 1886, the first hut named Tofanahütte was inaugurated by the Ampezzo section of the German and Austrian Alpine Association (DÖAV) on the Forcella Fontana Negra. It was the first refuge in the Tofans and was destroyed in the First World War.

After the end of the war, the newly established Cortina section of the Italian Alpine Club converted an Italian war barrack near the destroyed hut into a refuge. This new hut opened as Rifugio Cantore on September 5, 1921 and was dedicated to the Alpini General Antonio Cantore , who was shot and killed by an Austro-Hungarian sniper on the Forcella Fontana Negra during a front inspection in July 1915.

On September 17, 1972, today's hut opened, which was completely rebuilt and named after the mountaineer Camillo Giussani .

In the 1990s the remains of the old Tofane hut were converted into a winter bivouac. The former Cantore hut, however, is no longer used and is abandoned.
