Melchior Acontius

Melchior Acontius (other forms of name Melchior Volz , Melchior Foltze , Melchior Foltz ; * around 1515 in Oberursel ; † June 22, 1569 in Allstedt ) was a German humanist and poet.

Live and act

Acontius enrolled at the University of Heidelberg on June 4, 1533 , and in 1534 he moved to the University of Wittenberg . In Wittenberg he belonged to the circle of poets and was one of his friends Georg Aemilius , Georg Sabinus , Johannes Stigel and Johannes Gigas . He first came out in 1536 with a poem on the death of Erasmus of Rotterdam , which he evidently admired. Philipp Melanchthon - it seems - gave him his humanist name Acontius, which translates to Volz = bolt, throwing spike or bolt.

It is therefore not surprising that Acontius dedicated his epithalms to the wedding of his friend Sabinus and Melanchthon's daughter. Sabinus has included this consecration story among his own poems.

In 1540 Acontius went to Königstein, where he entered the service of Count Ludwig von Stolberg. Appointed to the Count's council, in 1549 he took part in the negotiations in Speyer about an innovation in coinage. He is also said to have represented the count at the imperial court.

Most of his works date from the Wittenberg period.
