Johannes Gigas

Johann (es) Gigas , graced from Heune, Hüne - (born February 22, 1514 in Nordhausen , † July 12, 1581 in Schweidnitz ) was a Protestant theologian, hymn poet, humanist, educator and reformer.

Life

Gigas was born the son of Nicolaus Heune, a resident of Nordhausen, and his wife Ursula (née Rieß). While visiting the Nordhausen city school, Johann Spangenberg became aware of him, who encouraged him and aroused in him a love of Latin poetry. At the age of 15 he was sent to school in Magdeburg at Easter 1530 , where he obtained his university entrance qualification under the rectorate of Georg Major and left school in 1535. He enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he trained with Justus Jonas the Elder at an early age . Ä. and learned from such famous teachers as Philipp Melanchthon and Martin Luther . 1537 he moved to the University of Leipzig and then returned to Wittenberg, where in 1540 he the academic degree of Magister of Arts acquired.

Following his studies, he took up a position as principal of the Latin school in Joachimsthal . In 1542 he went to Marienberg in the same position , where he gained such a good reputation that Melanchthon wanted to propose him as rector of the University of Königsberg . After Gigas had married Magdalena Pfeil on January 29, 1543, he moved as rector to the electoral state school in Pforta, created by Moritz von Sachsen in his “New State Order” .

As a humanist he wrote a “Methodus scribendi carmina” and wrote epigrams and other poems. After 1545, tired of the school service, he entered the church service. He went to Silesia and worked for 27 years as a pastor in Freystadt and from 1577 in Schweidnitz . There he published catechism sermons, which were widely used, and also spiritual songs.
