Melchior Ulrich

Melchior Ulrich (born April 24, 1802 in Zurich ; † July 22, 1893 there ) was a Swiss alpinist and a Reformed theologian .

Life

After Ulrich had successfully completed his studies with a doctorate, he completed his habilitation in 1833 at the University of Zurich . After a few years as a private lecturer, Ulrich was appointed associate professor of exegesis at the University of Zurich in 1837 . He held this position until 1856.

From 1842 to 1856 he was entrusted with the management of the Zürcher Hülfsgesellschaft . In the years 1861 to 1893 he was in front of this society again. Ulrich headed the Sparkasse of the City of Zurich from 1849 to 1854 and five years later again from 1861 to 1893.

Ulrich was one of the co-founders of the Swiss Alpine Club in 1863 , which he headed as central president from 1867 to 1869. In 1884 the Uto Section appointed him an honorary member.

On August 13, 1854, he succeeded in the first ascent of the group wall on the Vrenelisgärtli together with the Glarus mountain guides Johann Madutz , Niklaus Zweifel and the Bernese alpinist Gottlieb Studer . It was also the second ascent of this summit. A year earlier he had managed the third ascent of Tödi from the north with Studer and several companions .

Melchior Ulrich died on July 22, 1893 in Zurich at the age of 91. The Ulrichshorn in Valais west of the Saas Valley was named in his honor. The first ascent took place on August 10, 1848 by Melchior Ulrich, J.-J-Imseng, Franz Andermatten, Johann Madutz, Stephan Biner and Matthäus Zum Taugwald.
