Meliti ( Greek Μελίτη ( f. Sg. )) Is a village in the municipality of Florinain in the Greek region of Western Macedonia . Until 2010 it formed the municipality of Meliti (gr. Dimos Melitis Δήμος Μελίτης) with numerous surrounding villages . The village was recognized in 1918 as the rural municipality of Vostarani (Βοσταράνη or Kinotita Vostaranis ), renamed Meliti in 1926 and raised to a municipal municipality (dimos) in 1997 with the incorporation of numerous neighboring villages . With the administrative reform in 2010 , the municipality was incorporated into Florina and has since formed one of four municipal districts.

The municipality of Meliti is located in the north-western region of mainland Greece south of the border with North Macedonia and east of the Prespa lakes . In the western part of the area the landscape dominates the Florina and Bitola plains, in the eastern part the western and southwestern foothills of the Voras massif. In addition to the municipality of Amyndeo , the Melitis area also includes the range of hills and mountains that separate the Florina-Bitola plain from the Eordea plain. The small village of Neochoraki is located roughly in the geographical center of Melitis and directly at the intersection of road connections to the individual villages.

The current names of the parts of the municipality and localities were made binding by decrees of the Greek President Pavlos Koundouriotis in 1926 and 1928 : previously, the parts of the municipality and localities were known under different names (old name and year of renaming in brackets): Meliti (Vostarani, 1926) , Vevi (Banitsa, 1926), Neochoraki (Neogazi, 1928), Pappagiannis (Papaziani or Vakufkoy, 1928), and Skopos (Ano Nevoliani, 1928).

traffic

Two national roads lead through the municipality of Meliti on a common route: National road 2 (Europastraße 86) and Nationalstraße 3 (Europastraße 65) run from north-west in an arc to south through the municipality and leave it by means of the Klidi Pass. In the area of the Klidi Pass, a new route was created for the national roads, which in 2005 replaced the old winding route. Before the opening of the eastern bypass of Lake Vegoritida , which takes the national road 2 to Edessa and Thessaloniki, the national roads 2 and 3 separated to the west of the town of Vevi: the national road 2 led to the east via Kelli (Kella) in the direction of Edessa and Thessaloniki, the national road 3 to Amyndeo, Ptolemaida and Kozani to the south. The municipality of Meliti is also crossed by the Thessaloniki-Edessa-Florina railway line, opened in 1894 . It runs approximately along the route of the national roads over the Klidi Pass from Amyndeo via Vevi to Florina.

The economy of Melitis is traditionally determined by agriculture . The cultivation of grain has been predominant. After extensive lignite deposits were discovered in the Florina-Bitola plain, two lignite quarries near Vevi and Achlada emerged in the area of the municipality. The state-owned Greek electricity company DEI has built a lignite power plant in the municipal area near the village of Meliti and Achlada .
