Mellum Island

The Mellumrat is a nature conservation association that was founded in 1925 to protect the uninhabited North Sea island of Mellum and today also looks after other islands and areas in terms of nature conservation. It exists as a registered association and has an office in Varel - Dangast .

history

The origins of the association are based on the protection of sea birds due to the investigation of the island by local researchers, botanists and ornithologists Heinrich Schütte , Wilhelm Krüger and Karl Sartorius at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1909, the Oldenburg Ministry of the Interior issued the first order for the protection of sea birds on Mellum.

A legal basis for the work of the Mellum Council was created by the announcement of the Oldenburg State Ministry of March 28, 1921 for the implementation of the Reich Bird Protection Act. The Oldenburg Minister of Churches and Schools, the higher nature conservation authority, announced the ordinance on the nature reserve “Vogelfreistätte Insel Mellum” with a size of 25 hectares.

The association was founded on February 28, 1925. The following organizations were founding members:

  • the Oldenburg federal state group for bird protection
  • the Heimat-, Natur- und Vogelschutzverein Wilhelmshaven
  • the Society for the Protection of Native Birds in Bremen
  • the Reichsbund Vogelschutz
  • the Heligoland ornithological station

Each founding member sent a representative to the "Board of Directors" (hence: Mellumrat), who was entrusted with the administration. The association acquired its legal capacity on January 9, 1962 when it was entered in the association register.

Since April 2002 the association has been publishing a magazine that appears twice a year. In 2008 the foundation “Future Nature Conservation - Foundation Fund for Mellumrat e. V. “founded.

tasks

The main purpose of the association is to look after and monitor protected areas. Data on nature conservation and environmental protection are collected and research is carried out in the areas. The nature conservation stations at the individual stations record the populations of breeding and guest birds . There is intensive cooperation with the Helgoland ornithological institute as an institute for bird research. In addition, public relations work is carried out, including the issuing of publications, statements and expert reports. Since the 1990s, the Mellumrat has been raising awareness of the dangers of marine litter , most recently through a traveling exhibition and a rubbish collection campaign on Mellum. The Voluntary Ecological Year can be completed in the association.

Protected areas and stations

The association has expanded its nature conservation activities beyond the island of Mellum to other areas. These are the islands of Wangerooge (since 1935) and Minsener Oog (since 1946). Inland, the areas Sager Meer (since 1951) and Dümmer (since 1956) are looked after. Support for Strohauser Vorländer and Plate (since 1990) ended in 2015.

The support consists in the fact that the association maintains stations in the areas in which voluntary nature conservationists are stationed. They inhabit the stations from spring to autumn.
