Karl Sartorius (ornithologist)

Karl Sartorius (born July 3, 1875 in Oldenburg ; † October 15, 1967 there ) was a German teacher and ornithologist .

Life

Karl Sartorius' parents were the painter and decorator Hermann Sartorius and his wife Friederike. Sartorius grew up in Bad Zwischenahn . He made the first written ornithological observation in April 1891 at the age of 16. Karl Sartorius studied biology , in which he also did his doctorate , and attended the art college in Berlin for a short time , but he learned to paint and draw on his own . From 1898 to 1903 he worked as a drawing teacher at the Mariengymnasium in Jever . In 1903, at the age of 28, he returned to Oldenburg to work as a drawing and natural history teacher at the old grammar school . In addition to ornithology, Sartorius dealt with music and painting. Sartorius is buried in the Gertrudenfriedhof in Oldenburg.

Sartorius' sister Ella emigrated with her husband, who later became Hollywood - director Franz Reicher , in the United States of. Sartorius' marriage resulted in their daughter Ella in 1904.

Act

Karl Sartorius is known for his ornithological and animal painting works. The beach bird collection of today's Museum for Nature and Man in Oldenburg goes back mainly to Sartorius. In 1914 Sartorius was accepted into the Oldenburg Artists' Association. Sartorius was the founder of the Ornithological Society Oldenburg in 1922, which today exists as the Ornithological Working Group Oldenburg (OAO) in NABU . Together with Wilhelm Krüger from Wilhelmshaven and Heinrich Schütte from Oldenburg, he campaigned for "sea bird protection" on Mellum , from which in 1925 the " Mellumrat " emerged. In 1934 he was co-donor of a memorandum of the Landesverein für Heimatkunde und Heimatschutz and the Oldenburger Verein für Landesgeschichte und Altertumskunde submitted to the Ministry of the Interior, which had the purpose of encouraging extensive protection of the landscape. Since 1949 he was an honorary member of the Oldenburger Landesverein.

The Ornithological Working Group Oldenburg has named a bird watching hut in the Moorhauser Polder after Sartorius.

Sartorius' work comprises about 25 writings that deal primarily with the native bird species. The works appeared primarily in periodicals such as the “Ornithological Monthly Reports”, “Ornithological Messages”, “the Journal for Ornithology ” and the “Oldenburger Jahrbuch”.
