At the theater
The son of Emanuel Reicher and the singer Hedwig Reicher-Kindermann , who died at an early age, not even 30, of peritonitis , began his stage career in the 1890s as Franz Reicher in Oldenburg . It was there that he met his future wife Ella Sartorius, who was two and a quarter years his junior; the marriage lasted until her death in April 1947.
In 1899 Frank Reicher decided to emigrate to the USA. In New York City he began a long Broadway career in September 1899 with his part as Fritz in Becky Sharp . Until March 1926 Reicher played in the pieces When Knighthood Was in Flower, The Cavalier, The Little Princess, Ingomar, The Taming of the Shrew , Joan the Baptist, Our American Cousin, Children of Destiny, The Scarecrow, The Pigeon, Viel Lärm um nothing , The Rivals, The Honeymoon, Pariah, Divorcons, The Secret, Marie-Odile, Mary Stuart, Cloister, Countess Julia, Ambush, He Who Gets Slapped, From Morn to Midnight and The Goat Song .
At the end of September 1910, Reicher made his debut as a theater director with the play The Deserters . This was followed by his productions of Liliom , Back to Methuselah, From Morn to Midnight, Romeo and Juliet , Antonius and Cleopatra , The Fake, Carnival, A Tale of the Wolf, The Grand Duchess and the Waiter and The Monkey Talks from 1921 to 1925 . In 1911 he became an American citizen.
With the film
Although Reicher had gained a lot of experience as a silent film director between 1915 and 1921, the celluloid industry did not begin to gain in importance for him until 1926, when he moved to Hollywood . Reicher played small and medium-sized roles in an abundance of productions; However, only one made him famous: In the legendary first King Kong film, King Kong and the White Woman , he played the ship's captain Englehorn, who takes the film crew to the remote Pacific island with the giant monkey. In the far less spectacular sequel to King Kong's Son , he took up this role again in 1933. In the following years Reicher was often employed as a doctor, professor and scientist. He was also seen with tiny roles in legendary productions by William Dieterle , Ernst Lubitsch and Charlie Chaplin, as well as alongside Greta Garbo . In 1951 Frank Reicher withdrew into private life.
family
His half-siblings Hedwiga Reicher and Ernst Reicher also worked as actors.
