Melmoth is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the Mthonjaneni Parish in King Cetshwayo District . In 2011 the city had 7,814 inhabitants.

geography

Melmoth is located in northern KwaZulu-Natal about 200 kilometers northeast of Durban . It is 73 kilometers to Empangeni , 52 kilometers to Eshowe and 53 kilometers to Ulundi . The city lies at an altitude of 811 meters above sea level.

The average rainfall in Melmoth is 838 millimeters. Most of the precipitation falls in summer (October to March). The lowest amount of precipitation occurs in July with 10 millimeters. Most of the precipitation falls in January (127 millimeters). The average maximum temperature in Melmoth varies from 20.3 ° C in June to 26.5 ° C in January. The coldest month is June. Here the average minimum nighttime temperatures are 7.5 ° C.

history

Melmoth was founded by the British in 1887 after they annexed Zululand . The place was named after Melmoth Osborn , the then Resident Commissioner of the Zululand. A gold rush broke out in Melmoth around 1900, but it only lasted for a very short time. There are still old mining sites in the area.

The Zulu king Shaka was born in 1787 in the area that would later become Melmoth, under whose rule the Zulu rose from a small clan to a powerful people with power over a large part of what is now South Africa.

economy

The economic pillars of the city are agriculture and tourism. Mainly sugar cane is grown and forestry is practiced. Melmoth is also considered a trading center. Many tourist attractions of the Zululand are easily accessible from Melmoth, which is why the city is called the gateway to the Zululand. The South African edition of Trivial Pursuit describes Melmoth as the place with the cleanest air in South Africa.
