Memoro - The bank of memories

Memoro - The bank of memories (Italian: Memoro - la banca della memoria ) is a not-for-profit project based in Turin , Italy . It is dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of an interactive contemporary witness archive of oral history on the Internet . The organization, founded in 2007, aims to pass on the wealth of experience of older people to younger people. Memoro means in Esperanto : "memory".

Memoro is online in 16 countries. On the Memoro website, people over 60 years of age tell in short video and audio clips how they experienced the war and the post-war period, about social and political events, but also about very personal things. In this way, the memory of history, traditions and wisdom of the past is to be kept alive and made available free of charge to future generations worldwide. There are 12,000 clips online, 1200 of them in German.

The German branch was founded in 2009. It is a non-profit registered association in Munich .

Working method

The audio and video clips are recorded by club members and volunteer memory collectors, uploaded and then activated after checking the content. The classification is done through categorization and keywording. Every registered user has the opportunity to upload their own recordings, which are activated after checking the content. You can also create your own topics by grouping new clips by the user with existing ones and adding photos.

financing

Memoro develops mainly through the personal commitment of the Italian founders and employees in the respective countries. The German association is financed through donations and through projects with companies, associations, administrations and the institutions of the EU.

EU project "HIS-Story" - Lifelong Learning Program

As part of the “European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity Between Generations 2012”, a two-year Grundtvig Lifelong Learning project with the title HIS-Story: History, ICT and Seniors (2012-2014) was won. Senior citizens are introduced to the Internet and interview techniques in workshops in the five partner countries.

See also Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig : His pedagogical concept was the living word between teacher and student. There are no grades in Grundtvig schools. It is not the teachers who are lecturing material, but rather they are learning by asking the students. All from the point of view of enlightenment. Grundtvig wanted the school of life, lifelong learning for everyone involved. The theory of the Grundtvig school is not written down in a compact canon. Rather, it is primarily passed on orally and above all through practice. Today Grundtvig is the namesake of an EU program of the same name, which is dedicated to the idea of lifelong learning under the Socrates program. The Grundtvig programs seek to develop European cooperation in the field of adult education.

The channels of memory

The Channels of Memory is a project realized by Memoro - The Bank of Memories at the request of the Foundation of the City Museums of Venice (Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia). In agreement with the foundation, a website was created on which the residents of the lagoon report on their life experiences and the changes in the city. The idea is to offer a different perspective on the city: a virtual place in which audio and video contributions, as well as photographs, are collected, categorized, tagged and made available. The different aspects of the city are represented by thematic focuses. In this way it is possible to discover the nesting or meandering of city histories and toponomics (place-name studies, place-name research). With the help of selected place names and quotations, a mirror of the Venetian labyrinth is offered.
