Menahem Star (1988)

Menahem Stern (born March 5, 1925 in Białystok , † June 22, 1989 in Jerusalem ) was a Russian-Israeli classical philologist and ancient historian .

Life

His father came from the misnaged Jewish movement in Lithuania , his mother came from a Hasidic family. Stern came to Palestine with his family via Vienna in 1938. He attended school in Haifa and Tel Aviv (graduated in 1942), attended a kibbutz for a year and then studied history and classical philology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem with a master's degree in 1952. He married in 1952, spent two and a half years in Oxford and received his doctorate in 1960 in Jerusalem. In the same year he became a lecturer in Jewish history, 1964 senior lecturer, 1966 associate professor and 1971 professor. He was stabbed to death by two Palestinians during the Intifada in 1989 while en route to university in Jerusalem.

He studied the history of Israel during the Second Temple period . In continuation of the work of Yohanan Lewy , he edited the texts of Greek and Latin authors on Judaism in pre-Christian times. He also continued the work of Victor Tcherikover in the publication of Egyptian papyri on Judaism (with Alexander Fuks ).

In 1977 he received the Israel Prize . Since 1979 he has been a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences . He was president of the Israeli Historical Society, which has held annual memorial lectures for Menahem Stern since 1993 (published by Brandeis University Press).
