Menhir de Fohet

The Menhir de Fohet (also called Pierre Longue / Pierrelongue or Menhir d'Aydat) is located near the D 788 northwest of the village of Fohet near Aydat in the Puy-de-Dôme department in France .

It is 4.75 meters high, weighs around 15 tons and, along with the Pierre du Tombeau by Davayat, is one of the largest menhirs in Auvergne .

Historically, the stone was used at burials. The porters placed the coffin on the menhir and the priest of the parish of Saint-Julien-sur-Aydat recited the liturgical prayers before the deceased was brought to the church of Saint Julien.

Surroundings

Southwest of Clermont-Ferrand are / are between 20 and 30 menhirs and dolmens , including the dolmen de la Pineyre , de la Grotte , Saillant , Saint-Nectaire-le-Bas and the L'Usteau du Loup ( German  "House of the Wolf") ) in Saint-Gervazy.
