Dolmen la Grotta

The Dolmen de la Grotte ( German  "Dolmen of the cave" - also called Cournols allée couverte or La Grotta) is located south of Cournols in the Puy-de-Dôme department in the French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and is an allée couverte in one Field on a plateau about 800 m above sea level above the Monne river gorge . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The remains of the strange megalithic complex made of granite stones were excavated in 1841. The finds are in the Museum of Clermont-Ferrand.

The Allée couverte does not look like usual. It is a kind of double column, with two chambers that are rectangular and about 3.5 × 2.0 meters in size. The axial access is in the east and flows centrally into the anterior chamber.

The end stone on the west side and pieces or entire bearing stones are still in situ on the south and north sides . A broken capstone lies on top. In 1835 there were three cap stones (one in the corridor) later two. There is gravel from the former hill all around.

There are between 20 and 30 menhirs and dolmens nearby, including the Dolmen de la Pineyre , the Dolmen of Saint-Nectaire-le-Bas and L'Usteau du Loup (House of the Wolf) of St-Gervazy.
