The Mercatorviertel is a future district of the city of Duisburg that is currently being prepared . An outstanding part of the development will be a reconstruction of the former residential building of the well-known cartographer and geographer Gerhard Mercator .
location
The Mercatorviertel is located in the heart of the city of Duisburg, right by the town hall and the Salvatorkirche and near the inner harbor of Duisburg . Gutenbergstrasse, Poststrasse and Oberstrasse enclose the new quarter on the former site of a school.
Construction field and history
Previously unused buildings of the commercial vocational college in Duisburg and a secondary school were on the construction site. These structures were demolished by the end of 2016. The subsequent archaeological investigations uncovered one of the largest area monuments in Germany, which is to serve as the basis for the later redevelopment.
The archaeological investigations revealed building foundations from the early and late Middle Ages. The buildings were once residential buildings for the Duisburg upper class. Here, Duisburg's most famous citizen, the cartographer Gerhard Mercator and also the important Duisburg mayor Ott Vogel should be emphasized .
Planned development
A residential area is to be developed based on the historical structure. Around 350 residential units are to be built in six quarters on a total of 28,500 square meters. Mainly residential use is planned, which is to be supplemented by restaurants and subordinate shopping opportunities. Green areas are to be created in the car-free interior. An underground car park is also planned. Particular attention is paid to the planned reconstruction of the Mercator House and the Ott Vogel House.
Mercator House
The Mercator House was named after the famous scholar Gerhard Mercator. On his 500th birthday in 2012, the well-preserved foundation walls of his house were presented to the public. Gerhard Mercator lived here with his family and this was also where his workshop was located. After citizens pointed out that the remains of the Mercator House must still be located under a former parking lot, these were searched for and found. Since then, the reconstruction of the Mercator House has been discussed and in the early summer of 2014 a feasibility study was ceremoniously handed over to the mayor.
Ott-Vogel-House
The Ott-Vogel-Haus is named after its former resident, the former mayor of Duisburg. It is the right annex of the Mercator House and was built in a similar style. It is to be reconstructed together with the Mercator House.
