Mero (born July 28, 2000 in Rüsselsheim ; real name Enes Meral ) is a German rapper with Turkish roots.

Career

Mero, whose parents come from the Turkish province of Gümüşhane ( Kelkit ), grew up in the Rüsselsheim district of Dicker Busch , which is often mentioned in Mero's songs. He has two older sisters. He first drew attention to himself through rap videos on his Instagram account. Mero now has 2.5 million subscribers there (as of December 2019). His style is characterized by choruses with an oriental touch and the use of doubletime . In his youth he played soccer before his rap career . a. also in the U17 team of SV Darmstadt 98 . He completed his school career with a secondary school diploma.

On November 22, 2018, Mero released his debut single Baller los . The video received a million views after just one day and immediately reached number one in the German trend charts on YouTube . The single also rose to number one in the German single charts. This makes him the first rapper in the history of the German single charts who immediately reached first place with his debut single.

The second single, Hobby Hobby , was released on January 18, 2019 and already recorded over 1.7 million streams on Spotify and over 3 million views on YouTube after just one day , setting a new record in Germany. The song was shared among others by the soccer player Mesut Özil , who, like Mero, is of Turkish descent.
With the single Wolke 10 , which generated around 4.5 million views on YouTube after 24 hours and thus exceeded the record set by Hobby Hobby , the rapper made it to the top of the German list for the fourth time in a row in mid-March 2019 with its fourth release Single charts.
His first studio album Ya Hero Ya Mero was released on March 15, 2019 and reached number 1 in the German album charts.

On July 13, 2019 Mero announced his second studio album Unikat . With the second single, Olabilir , which, in contrast to Mero's other songs, consists in parts of parts performed in Turkish, he was successful for the first time in Turkey and stayed there for three weeks at first place on the Turkish Spotify charts. Mero is currently under contract with Groove Attack TraX, a label owned by Xatar and distributed by Groove Attack ; he signed there in May 2018.

Allegations & criticism

Since the success of the song Baller los and especially since the beginning of 2019, there has been increasing criticism of Mero's music. His songs are very similar and have been composed according to the same scheme. The lyrics were also subject to multiple criticism and it was often pointed out that a younger target group in particular listened to his music. The criticism is usually not limited to Mero, but also to other "newcomers", especially the rappers who are said to have a similarity in their names (e.g. Fero47 or Sero el Mero ).

In January 2019, accusations were raised based on two videos kissing online that Mero was “lifted”. In a short Instagram video, the rapper denied these allegations and explained the background of the videos. After the publication of Mero's song Cloud 10 in March 2019, it was claimed on various Internet platforms and by rapper Azzi Memo that Mero's chorus was based too much on the song Mirror by US rapper Lil Wayne or even "copied" it. In the course of this, there was mutual tension between Meros and Azzi Memo's environment, in which each other was accused of "copying".

Due to the surprisingly high streaming numbers of some songs on Spotify and YouTube, accusations were raised in early 2019 that Mero and / or those around him would “buy streams and clicks”. This accusation spread to other German rappers, mostly “newcomers”. From February onwards, the number of views on some Instagram videos of numerous people from the German rap scene rose in a short time to heights that were perceived as "unrealistic". For example, the teaser for the single cloud 10 on Mero's Instagram page received around 12 million views after twelve hours. Three anonymous people declared themselves responsible for the “click purchases”. In an interview they said their goal was to generate attention, to “stop the newcomer scene a bit” and to “devalue” the “clicks”.

The video documentation format Y-Kollektiv published a video in May that deals with suspected chart manipulation among rappers. In the almost 23-minute video, reporter Ilhan Coşkun u. a. an interview with a masked person named Kai. He claimed that he was manipulating the charts for some of Germany's most commercially successful rappers. Using a few examples, he illustrated his approach. According to Kai, only the managers and not the artists themselves were informed about the manipulations. As a reason for the publication, he stated that his girlfriend had been "turned on" and "relaxed" by people in the rapeseed scene. The documentary received over a million views within a very short time, so that afterwards some rappers commented on the content of the video.

Since managers were mentioned in the interview and the names Sero El Mero and Mero were also mentioned, one day later rapper Xatar , label boss of the two rappers, responded to the allegations against him and his in a more than twelve-minute statement video Artist. The video was u. a. also shared by Mero. In it, Xatar affirmed that neither he nor his employees had ever bought “fake clicks” or “fake streams”. According to him, the allegations are baseless and there is no evidence. He assumes that the man presented as a hacker in the documentation is actually not a real hacker. Towards the end of the video he offered him and reporter Ilhan Coşkun a face-to-face meeting with a live stream. Youtuber Mois, who maintains contacts with many well-known German rappers, invited Xatar to an interview after a personal phone call, which appeared one day later. In it, Xatar asked himself a few questions, most of which related to the allegations of manipulation. He reiterated that he was innocent and explained why it "wouldn't make sense" to buy clicks for artists like Mero.

Alluding to the documentation, jokes arose about the supposed “click buyer” Kai. These developed into a widespread meme within the Deutschrap community and can be found above all in the comment columns under videos and posts by or about Mero.
