Meron (Hebrew: מֵירוֹן) is a settlement in Galilee in northern Israel , near Safed . Meron had 963 inhabitants in 2018.
The eponymous mountain Meron in Upper Galilee, north-west of Safed is the highest elevation (1,208 m) in Israel and the wettest point of Israel.
history
The present settlement was founded in 1949 after the end of the Palestine War by Israeli soldiers from Hungary and Czechoslovakia on the site of historic Meron, which was depopulated during the war.
Attractions
The tomb of Shimon ben Jochai is located in Meron and has been a destination for Jewish pilgrims since the Middle Ages. Every year several thousand pilgrims gather at the time of the lag baOmer and celebrate the Hilula de Rabbi Jochai (festival of Rabbi Jochai) in Meron .
Meron is known for its vineyards at an altitude of over 600 m.
