A measuring magnifier is a tool that consists of a detail magnifier and a permanently installed measuring scale in the form of a ruler . Its simplest form is the foldable thread counter .

Instead of a scale , transverse scales or geometric figures ( circle , rectangle , triangle ) etc. with defined and known dimensions are also possible.

The measuring scale can be attached to a glass or metal plate (see also: graticule ).

The magnifying glass is usually guided displaceably in a tube . This enables an adaptation to the individual ametropia of the user and the optimal setting of the magnifying glass for a sharp image of the scale, which is brought into a plane with the object to be measured.

The tube can be opaque, transparent and / or provided with a lighting device. This depends on the area of application.
