Metam-potassium is a chemical compound from the group of dithiocarbamates . Like the much more popular metam sodium, it is used as a soil disinfectant ( tamifume ). It releases methyl isocyanate in the soil .

It has also been shown in tests to be effective in combating sedge grasses .

In the European Union, on the basis of data that was not provided, it was decided in 2009 that Metam would no longer be listed as an approved active ingredient in plant protection products. In 2010, a manufacturer submitted a new application for approval and submitted the missing studies. In 2012, the Commission decided to approve Metam as an active ingredient in the EU. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland no pesticides with this active ingredient are approved.
