The Meteoro- class is a class of 2,505 ton displacement ocean- going patrol boats of the Spanish Armada . The first boat was handed over to the Armada on July 28, 2011. Another three of the nine firmly ordered boats are in service.
history
The corvette- sized boats are being procured as part of the Buques de Acción Marítima project for patrols and various tasks in the exclusive economic zone of the Kingdom of Spain . The company Navantia received the 340 million euro development and construction contract for the first four units on May 31, 2006. The first funds for the second, five-unit construction lot were planned for 2011 in the budget. Three of them should be designed as patrol boats, one for search and rescue (SAR) and another for ocean research . Only in May 2014, two more boats were initially ordered.
The first two units arrived at their new home port of Las Palmas at the beginning of June 2012 , where they are to monitor the sea area between the Canary Islands and the West African coast.
technology
In addition to the tasks mentioned above, the boats are also designed for support and relief measures in third countries. They are lightly armed and equipped for rescue and disaster operations. These include medical aid, material transport and the fight against environmental pollution. For this purpose, they also have a helicopter deck including an associated hangar. With the exception of a few military aspects, they are built to civilian standards. It is powered by a CODOE system (CODOE = CO mbined D iesel O r E lectric), which consists of two MTU diesel engines with 4500 kW each and two electric motors with 750 kW each.
The size of the corvette allows a certain degree of autonomy for missions with appropriate accommodation for the crew and other people. The highly automated weapon and sensor systems are designed to be highly compatible with other ships in the Armada.
