The Metrô de Porto Alegre is administered jointly by the Brazilian central government and the government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the prefecture of the city of Porto Alegre . Through these three bodies the company Trensurb ( Empresa de Trens Urbanos de Porto Alegre SA ), to which 17 stations and a total rail route of 33.8 km belong, was founded. history
The only line so far (Linha 1) was planned in 1980 and put into operation on March 2, 1985. It connects the center of the city with the northern area around the towns of Canoas, Esteio, Sapucaia do Sul, São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo . This route was chosen to reduce traffic on the BR-116 federal road. In 1997 this route was extended to Unisinos. Another section of 2.45 km to Museu was added in 2000 after a test run.
