MetroBus Maputo

MetroBus is a suburban railway system with bus connections in the greater area of ​​the Mozambican capital Maputo . Operations on the first (of four) lines of the state-owned CFM began in early February 2018.

The MetroBus offer is a public-private partnership between the private rail transport company Fleet Rail and the state-owned railway company CFM. The aim is to have a clocked suburban railway system in the Maputo area on the Maputo - Manhiça ( Linha de Limpopo ), Maputo– Matola ( Ramal de Matola ), Maputo– Goba ( Linha de Goba ) and Maputo– Ressano Garcia ( Linha de Ressano Garcia ) routes record. The new transport system will mainly serve commuters from the suburbs. Specially set up bus services from various suburbs as well as within Maputo are set up as feeders to the trains.
It is expected to have around 3.6 million passengers in 2018. The first line between Maputo and Matola or Boane started traffic at the beginning of February 2018, from July 2018 [obsolete] also between Maputo and Marracuene . From November 2018, extensions of the lines to Manhiça (via Marracuene), Goba (via Boane) and Ressano Garcia are planned. The first test drives to Goba and Marracuene took place in early December 2017. In Matola, the operator will first set up a provisional stop before a completely new train station including a car park for up to 400 vehicles will be built.

So far, however, the traffic cannot be compared with the suburban railway networks of other major African cities (such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Cairo). Mainly the trains only run in the load direction (in the morning to Maputo, in the afternoon / in the evening from Maputo). The transport company is planning a major expansion of the offer, for which the corresponding number of vehicles is still missing.

The transport system is financed by the private company Fleet Rail (a subsidiary of the Sir Motors company), the state-owned CFM and the city and district administrations of Maputo, Matola, Boane , Marracuene and Machava .

As rail vehicles, Fleetrail bought four used, diesel-powered trains with four ADK / ADB cars each from New Zealand , which were used as suburban trains in the greater Auckland area between 1994 and 2014 .

Tickets

The company issues rechargeable, prepaid tickets for the suburban railway system. Relatively high announced prices for monthly subscriptions of up to 3500 Meticais (~ 50 euros) caused criticism in the media and social networks, given the relatively low wage level in the country. The company said it was targeting middle-class commuters as a customer group. In the meantime, after negotiations with the national government, the prices have been reduced, some massively.

In April 2018 the Mozambican Minister of Transport Carlos Mesquita announced a similar offer in the greater Beira area. There are scheduled suburban trains between Beira and Dondo (on the "Linha de Machipanda").
