Meyba is a former sporting goods company from Barcelona .

history

Founded in the 1940s in Barcelona by Josep Mestre, Joaquim Ballbé - whose last name was used for the acronym Meyba: Me ' stre y Ba llbé ( ' y ' is Spanish and means ' and ) - the fashionable shoes, T-shirts and Wanted to create (bathing) pants for the beach visits of the residents of Barcelona. The two of them got the idea after an anecdote while they were in a swimming pool. During the dictatorship of Francisco Franco in Spain, Meyba was almost the only swimwear company: the then Minister of Tourism and Information, Manuel Fraga Iribarne, wore Meyba bathing trunks when he jumped into the Mediterranean after the Palomares nuclear accident in 1966 to show the press present that there is no radioactive hazard.

Meyba's peak was in the 1980s, when it became the official supplier (often the first ever) to several sports teams, including the first for FC Barcelona from 1982 to 1992 .

Meyba had to declare bankruptcy in 1994 and finally closed the factory gates in 1997. In the same year, the Pulligan Group bought the trademark rights to Meyba and, in addition to beach and swimwear, also manufactured clothing for sailors. In 2011 the brand rights in the swimwear sector, Meyba Naval, were bought by the insolvent Pulligan Group from Igualadina de Marcas (Imar).

In 2013, the Dutch Premium Inc., founded by Johan Cruyff , bought the trademark rights to Meyba in the area of shoes and fashion from an acquaintance of the two founders. In 2014, shoes and sportswear with the look of the 1980s were released; Nowadays, in terms of marketing, efforts are primarily made to focus on the connection to FC Barcelona and players who played in Meyba shirts ( Pep Guardiola , Ronald Koeman , Michael Laudrup , Diego Maradona ). As soon as Igualadina de Marcas (Imar) license to Meyba Naval, which has a different logo, expires, Premium Inc. wants to secure it.
