Meyer Robert Guggenheim

Meyer Robert Guggenheim (born May 17, 1885 in New York City , † November 16, 1959 in Georgetown , Washington, DC ) was an American businessman and diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Portugal .

Meyer Robert Guggenheim came from the industrial family of the Guggenheims . His grandfather was Meyer Guggenheim , his father Daniel Guggenheim . His younger brother Harry also became a diplomat and US ambassador to Cuba . Meyer Robert Guggenheim was married a total of four times.

Guggenheim served in the US Army during World War I and achieved the rank of major . He then took on a board position at the family-owned company, the American Smelting and Refining Company . On June 24, 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated him as United States Ambassador to Portugal; after confirmation by the US Senate , he was able to take office on August 12 of the same year. He held his post in Lisbon until September 19, 1954.
