Michał Bergson

Michał Bergson (aka Bereksohn) (born May 20, 1820 in Warsaw , † March 9, 1898 in London ) was a Polish pianist and composer .

Life

Bergson comes from an important Jewish family in Warsaw. He studied under Friedrich Schneider in Dessau and under Carl Friedrich Rungenhagen and Wilhelm Taubert in Berlin . In 1837/38 he corresponded with Robert Schumann . He then lived mostly in Paris and London . Around 1857 he married Catherine Lewinson (1830–1928) from Yorkshire and in 1863 became a professor at the Conservatory in Geneva , where he took over the management a few years later.

He had seven children, including the philosopher and Nobel laureate in literature Henri Bergson (1859–1941) and the occultist Moina Mathers b. Bergson (1865-1928).
