Iwan Müller (born December 3, 1786 in Reval , Russian Empire , † February 4, 1854 in Bückeburg ) was a German clarinetist , composer and instrument maker who made great contributions to the further development of his instrument.

Life

Müller was born to German parents in Reval and around 1805 was employed as a chamber musician in St. Petersburg . In 1809 he went to Paris and built an instrument factory there, which in 1812 brought a new type of "Clarinette omnitonique" with 13 airtight keys onto the market for the first time. While the old flaps had a simple tilt mechanism and a felt pad so that they never really closed perfectly, Müller developed the spoon flap with a leather pad and sunk the holes with a raised, conical ring, the Zwirl , as is still common today . In addition, he was the first to attach the leaf with an adjustable metal ring. Due to a negative report from the Paris Conservatoire Müller's factory went bankrupt, but his innovation caught on after just a few years.

In 1820 Müller left Paris again to go to Russia . Three years later he turned to Germany and found a job , first in Kassel and, in 1825, in Berlin . In 1826 he traveled to Switzerland , in the spring of 1828 he can be traced back to Vienna , later in London and after the July Revolution of 1830 again in Paris. Most recently he was court musician of Prince Georg Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe in Bückeburg.

Müller is also considered the inventor of the modern alto clarinet.
