Life

Adie was born to Walter Granville Adie and his wife Kate Emily Adie. He attended Westminster School and studied at St John's College of Oxford University . In 1955 he was ordained a priest. After his ordination he was first parish vicar ( curate ) at St Luke Church in Pallion , a suburb of Sunderland . He was then resident Chaplain of Geoffrey Fisher , the then Archbishop of Canterbury . Then he was from the early 1960s to 1969 pastor ( Vicar ) at St Mark Church in Sheffield . He also became dean ( Rural Dean ) of Hallam . He was then from 1969 to 1976 parish pastor ( Rector ) in Louth . From 1976 to 1983 he was in the county of Lincolnshire pastor ( vicar ) of Morton (with responsibility for the parish of Hacconby) in the diocese of Lincoln . In 1977 he became archdeacon (head of a church district) in the Diocese of Lincoln (Archdeacon of Lincoln); he held this office until 1983.

On May 5, 1983, Adie was appointed Bishop of Guildford , succeeding David Brown (1922-1982) ; He was ordained a bishop on June 30, 1983 . He retired on September 3, 1994, and was succeeded by John Gladwin .

Adie held numerous church offices. He was, among other things, a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and Chairman ( Chairman ) of the influential Board of Education of the General Synod of the Church of England. His successor there was David Young .

From 1991 to 1995 he was also Director ( Director ) of the Church's Foundation The Friends of Guildford Cathedral . 1999/2000 he was also Director ( Director ) of Hurstpierpoint College ( Hurstpierpoint College Limited ) in Hassocks, West Sussex .

Adie was a proponent of women's ordination ; in his view, the ordination of women to the priesthood is in harmony with Scripture and the lineage of the Church. He took this position before the General Synod of the Church of England and in the House of Lords .

Adie is married. He is the father of four children, one son and three daughters.

Membership in the House of Lords

Adie was from 1988 until his retirement in 1994 as minister Lord member of the House of Lords . In the Hansard , verbal contributions from the years 1978 to 1994 are documented under the name "Mr Michael Adie"; the end of his membership is set for September 30, 1994. In the House of Lords, he last spoke up on April 12, 1994 in the debate on the Education Bill.

In the House of Lords he spoke mainly on the subjects of education and upbringing . In May 1993, in the context of the Education Bill debate, he raised concerns about government plans to publicly fund religious schools. Adie demanded that funding should not be left to the government's discretion; Church schools rather need planning security in the interests of the students entrusted to them.

His speech on the ordination of women before the House of Lords on November 2, 1993, attracted particular attention. In December 1993, together with Alun Jones, Baron Chalfont , he supported a campaign aimed at the police investigation ( Falklands War Crime Inquiry ) of war crimes in the Falklands War , as justice cannot be established in this way. He also opposed tendencies to portray the British Army as a scapegoat .
