Michael Alram

Michael Alram (born April 18, 1956 in Vienna ) is an Austrian numismatist .

Life

He has been studying Classical Archeology, Ancient Numismatics and Ancient History at the University of Vienna since 1974 , where he received his doctorate in 1982 with Robert Göbl and Manfred Mayrhofer with the dissertation "Material foundations for Iranian personal names on ancient coins: Achaemenid satraps, Persis, Sakas and Pahlavas" .

From 1977 to 1982 he worked for the Iranian Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for the research project “Iranian personal names on ancient coins” of the “Iranian personal name book”. Since 1982 he has been a member of the Numismatic Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 1982 he has worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Numismatics at the University of Vienna, where he completed his habilitation in 1987.

Since 1987 Alram has been the custodian at the coin cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, where he was responsible for the Byzantine, medieval and oriental coins. Since 2001 he has been deputy director and since 2008 director of the Münzkabinett.

Alram has been a corresponding member since 1998 and a real member since 2003 of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

On April 19, 2013, Alram was elected Vice President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for a four-year term from July 1, 2013. In April 2017, he was confirmed in his position for the period from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022.
