Manfred Mayrhofer
Manfred Mayrhofer (born September 26, 1926 in Linz ; † October 31, 2011 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Indo-Germanist specializing in the Indo-Iranian languages .
Life
Mayrhofer studied Indo-European Studies , Semitic Studies and Philosophy in Graz . Here he received his doctorate in 1949, and in 1951 his habilitation followed.
From 1953 he worked at the University of Würzburg , first as a visiting professor, from 1958 as an adjunct professor, and since 1959 as a full professor. From 1962 to 1966 he taught as a full professor in Saarbrücken , from 1966 until his retirement in 1990 as a full professor at the University of Vienna .
He is best known for his Etymological Dictionary of Old Indian Aryan .
