Michael Georg Bistekos (born November 15, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian software ergonomics expert, innovator and inventor . Since 1987 he has been the world's first usability expert for software to offer this developer service and has set some usability standards for user software .

Life

Michael Bistekos is the son of the Austrian Pauline Bistekos (née Reader) and the Greek entrepreneur Georg Bistekos . He grew up in Vienna, where he attended elementary school and the engineering for electrical engineering was formed. He lives in Vienna. From 1990 to 1993 he was also a freelance editor and speaker at Radio CD International with a focus on technical contributions.

Working in a computer peripherals company gave him access to mainframes and eventually to the first personal computers from Apple and later IBM . In 1982 he began to write and translate user manuals for peripheral devices and software that were easy to understand. He soon realized that operating instructions for software applications are largely unnecessary if they are structured in an easily understandable manner.

In 1987, he finally defined the term “software ergonomics” in German for the first time and defined the job description of a “software ergonomist”, as he initially called himself. Initially, he only offered this service to German-speaking software houses. In 1996 he presented his company, which was still the only company of its kind at the time, under the name "Bistekos' Ergonomics Laboratory for Software" for the first time at the SYSTEMS computer and software trade fair in Munich . In 1997 the company was exhibited for the first time at CeBIT in Hanover .

He also teaches WEB usability at various seminar and software houses and organizes workshops on usability in general.

Awards

At IFABO Vienna in 1996 he received the 1st prize for usability for the “ Telebanking MBS” of the Austrian SPARDAT, today s IT Solutions .

Innovations

His best-known innovations in software ergonomics include the “Talking Dropdown Lists”, the “Tab Dialogs”, the “Progressive Tab System”, the “Associators or Talking Controls” and the “I want…” syntax. The inventions “ graphic programmer ”, the “silent fan” and “bearing lubrication for wet-running pumps” were patented under his own name .
