Michael Chalupka (born July 21, 1960 in Graz ) is an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran theologian. He has been Bishop of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria since September 1st, 2019 .

Life

Chalupka studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Vienna and Zurich and graduated with a Magister theologiae (Mag. Theol.). Further training followed in the areas of adult education and management of non-profit organizations .

He was a specialist inspector for religious education in Styria. After a two-year stay in Italy as head of studies at the Centro Ecumenico d'Agape in Prali (Torino), he worked from 1989 to 1994 as a Protestant pastor in Mistelbach (Lower Austria) .

From 1994 to 2018 Chalupka was director of Diakonie Österreich , the social work of the Protestant churches in Austria and one of the five largest Austrian welfare organizations. In 1995 Michael Chalupka was one of the initiators of the poverty conference . In 1999 he was elected chairman of the Evangelical Relief Organization in Austria , and since 2000 Michael Chalupka has been president of the Austrian Committee for Social Work (ÖKSA). In 2006 he became chairman of the Evangelical Schools AB Vienna .

After four terms of office, his term of office as Diakonie Director ended on August 31, 2018. In September 2017, the Diakonisches Rat, the governing body of Diakonia in Austria, had Rev. Maria Katharina Moser elected as the new director of Diakonie Austria. For the time up to taking office as bishop Michael Chalupka is one of the two managing directors of Diakonie-Bildung acc. GmbH .

On May 4, 2019, he was elected Bishop of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria by the Synod ; on September 1, 2019, he succeeded Bishop Michael Bünker and was appointed bishop on October 13, 2019.

Chalupka is married and has one daughter.
