Michael Cobabus

Michael Cobabus (* 1610 in Sternberg ; † February 6, 1686 in Rostock ) was a professor of mathematics and theology at the University of Rostock .

education and study

Michael Cobabus was born the son of a blacksmith in Sternberg in Mecklenburg . First he learned his father's craft, but in 1626 he moved to the University of Rostock to study philosophy, theology and mathematics. On September 14, 1637, Cobabus received his master's degree from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock .

academic career

From 1646 to 1654 Cobabus was rector of the Rostock city school. In 1652 Cobabus was appointed professor of lower mathematics by the Rostock city council. A year later, 1653, he received at the University of Greifswald , the licentiate in theology before he also received his doctorate in theology in the following year there. Cobabus' marriage to Elisabeth Krüger (1618–1703), the widow of the legal scholar Dr. Johann Niebauer .

In 1670 Cobabus resigned the professorship in lower mathematics and from now on, also after appointment by the city council of Rostock, held the professorship for theology and thus succeeded Johann Quistorp (the younger), who died on December 24, 1669, into office.

Michael Cobabus was Rector of the University of Rostock three times during his professorship (1658, 1672, 1675).
