Anthony Epstein

Sir Michael Anthony Epstein CBE (born May 18, 1921 in London ) is an English virologist . In 1964, together with his colleagues Yvonne M. Barr and Bert G. Achong , he discovered the Epstein-Barr virus in cell cultures from African Burkitt lymphomas .

Live and act

Epstein studied at the St. Paul's School, London, at the Trinity College of Cambridge University and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School.

He was professor of pathology at the University of Bristol from 1968 to 1985 and head of the department until 1983.

In 1973 he was awarded the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize . In 1979 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London . From 1986 to 1991 he was Vice President of the Royal Society . In 1985 he was made Commander of the British Empire and knighted in 1991 . In 1983 he received the Leeuwenhoek Medal of the Royal Society and in 1988 a Gairdner Foundation International Award . Since 1989 he has been a member of the Academia Europaea .
