In the 2017 federal election campaign, Espendiller called for an end to "cuddle justice" and harsher penalties for physical violence against police officers. He complained to the WDR that “radical left idiots” were not adequately punished after the G20 protests in Hamburg , even though they had put Hamburg in “rubble and ashes”. Before the election, Espendiller told a local newspaper that the right-wing Thuringian state chief Björn Höcke was “a burden” in the election campaign.

Espendiller denies the amount of the anthropogenic share of global warming named by the IPCC . At a citizens' dialogue in January 2019, for example, Espendiller said that “people only have a very, very, very little influence on it”. Espendiller also rejects the hockey stick diagram , which was introduced by climatologist Michael E. Mann and has since been robustly reproduced several times.
