Michael F. Singer

Michael F. Singer (born February 25, 1950 in New York City ) is an American mathematician .

Singer studied at New York University with a bachelor's degree in 1970 and at the University of California, Berkeley , with a master's degree in 1972 and a doctorate from Maxwell Rosenlicht in 1974 ( Functions Satisfying Elementary Relations ). From 1974 he was an instructor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY) and from 1976 Assistant Professor, from 1982 Associate Professor and from 1986 Professor at North Carolina State University .

In 1978/78 and 1985 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 2001/02 he was Deputy Director and in 2002/03 Acting Director of MSRI . He was visiting professor at the University of Bonn , at the universities of Rennes, Strasbourg and Linz and visiting scholar at the Isaac Newton Institute . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

He deals with differential algebra and algorithmic algebra.
