Soccer career

SC Rotation Leipzig

Coming from the youth department of the SC Rotation Leipzig, the 20-year-old Faber was accepted into the league squad of Leipzig for the 1959 season. He came as a replacement for the retired midfielder Wolfgang Seifert and immediately won a regular place in the Oberligaelf. He played 23 of the 26 played point games, usually as a left runner, and scored three goals. As a midfielder, he played all 65 point games in the following two seasons (39 rounds were played due to the changeover of the schedule to the summer-spring rhythm). At the end of 1960 he was accepted into the squad of the GDR youth national team. With her he played nine international matches until 1965. From the 1962/63 season on, Faber played at SC Rotation as a stopper in defense.

SC Leipzig

In June 1963, the two Leipzig sports clubs Rotation and Lokomotive were dissolved and the new Leipzig sports club was founded. The allegedly best players of the two former clubs were accepted into the soccer section of the SC Leipzig, the remaining players not eligible for support were assigned to the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Leipzig as “rest of Leipzig” . Faber, who had previously played 111 league games for SC Rotation and scored five goals there, was taken over by SC Leipzig and immediately found his way in the newly formed team. Coach Rudolf Krause let him play in the 1963/63 season initially on the right side of the defense, in the second half of the season he came back to the defense center. Again he played all 26 league games. Against all expectations, BSG Chemie Leipzig won the GDR championship this season, while SC Leipzig, which was rated higher, only came third. Although he reached the final of the soccer cup, he lost 3-2 to SC Aufbau Magdeburg with Faber as right defender and the shooter to the 1-0 lead. In 1964/65 Faber only made 17 league appearances due to injury and played mainly as a left defender. In the first half of the 1965/66 season he was back in all 13 games, coach Krause used him variably both as a stopper and on the left side of defense. In January 1966 the soccer section of the sports club became the new 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. By then, Faber had played 56 league games for SC Leipzig and had again scored five goals.

At the end of 1963, Faber was appointed to the squad for the senior national team. He was taken to a Southeast Asia tour and was used as a right defender on December 17, 1963 in the international match Burma - GDR (1: 5). It was Faber's only full international match.

1. FC Lok Leipzig

The second half of the 1965/66 season played Faber at 1. FC Lok under the new coach Günter Konzack , who consistently used him in all 13 point games as a left defender. This remained Faber's position in the following years, even when the four-man defensive chain prevailed in GDR football from 1967. With the season 1966/67 Hans Studener had taken over the coaching position at 1. FC Lok, but could not prevent that the club had to relegate from the league after the season 1968/69. Up until then, Faber had only missed a single point game. Also in the second-rate GDR league , Faber played all point games again and was thus significantly involved in the immediate resurgence of 1. FC Lok. As a second division, the Leipzig team surprisingly reached the final of the GDR soccer cup. Faber played in a cup final for the second time, but lost again as a right defender with his team, this time 2: 4 against Vorwärts Berlin. At the beginning of his eleventh league season, Faber had reached the age of 31. Coach Kurt Holke , who had bet on Faber in the GDR league, only used him sporadically in eleven league games in the 1970/71 season, several times as a sweeper .

After 159 competitive games for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, Faber ended his career as a football player in the performance area in the summer of 1971. In the GDR league between 1959 and 1971 he played 268 games and scored 16 goals. In the Messestädte-Pokal , Faber played for the Leipzig City Team, SC Leipzig and 1. FC Lok in 31 games. In 1967, Faber made it to the quarter-finals of the trade fair cup with 1. FC Lok.
