Michael Ferrante (born April 28, 1981 in Melbourne ) is an Australian football player who is currently without a club and was most recently under contract with Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand .

Career

Ferrante attended the Australian Institute of Sport between 1997 and 1998 before venturing to Europe and playing in the youth academy of the English club West Ham United . In 1999 he won the FA Youth Cup with the youth team West Hams with a 9-0 win on a round trip against Coventry City. Ferrante led the team around players like Joe Cole and Michael Carrick as captain in one game . After he did not get into the professional squad at West Ham until 2001, he left England and played for some time in the lower Italian divisions at Comprens Stabia and Benevento Calcio .

In 2004 he returned to Australia and initially played for Fawkner Blues . In 2005 he signed a contract with Melbourne Victory in the newly formed A-League and was a regular player in the first season. After the commitments of Fred and Grant Brebner , the midfielder lost his regular place and only made five appearances in the 2006/07 championship season. After the end of the season, he dissolved his contract by mutual agreement with the club and joined the newly formed New Zealand A-League team Wellington Phoenix . In 2010 he left the team on a free transfer.
