Michael Gold

Michael Gold (born Itzok Isaac Granich , also called "Mike") (born April 12, 1894 in New York City , † May 14, 1967 in Terra Linda , California ) was an American writer and literary critic .

Life

Gold was born on the Lower East Side of New York, one of three sons of Romanian Jewish immigrants . He published his first book under the name "Irwin Granich". Under the pseudonym "Michael Gold" he wrote his book " Jews without Money ", which became a bestseller . During the period of the civil war-like " Palmerian raids " he was committed to persecuted anarchists and communists . In 1925 he traveled to the Soviet Union , an admirer of which he had become since the October Revolution . In 1926 he began to publish the magazine " The New Masses " ("The new masses"), which he headed from 1928 to 1934 as editor-in-chief .

The popularity of his book "Jews without Money" made him the cultural leader of the Communist Party of the USA . Until his death he wrote editorials for her newspaper " Daily Worker ".
