Cross of light above the Katholikon of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem 1996

After graduating from the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in 1984, Hammers completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and then worked in several workshops. In 1992 he passed the master's examination as a blacksmith and metal designer with distinction. In 1994 he founded the Nagel Hammers workshops with the architect Johannes Nagel. From 1997 he took lessons in classical singing.

In 1996 he was responsible for the packaging and transport of the monumental cross of light that crowns the dome over the so-called Katholikon on the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The design came from the Wesselingen sculptor Paul Nagel and the architect Johannes Nagel. The technical concept and the implementation planning were created by the architects' office Johannes Nagel. The Nagel Hammers workshops were responsible for the execution. On-site assembly was managed by workshop master Andreas Grape.

In 2006 he introduced the Michael Hammers Artmanship and has since worked as a freelance artist and designer. Among other things, he designed the Golden Wall in the new house for Mozart at the Salzburg Festival . He also increasingly turned to audiovisual work. His film "From the Infinity of the Cosmos", a homage to Maria Callas , premiered in 2007 at the Metropolitan Opera , New York. In 2007 he founded "Michael Hammers Studios GmbH", in which craftsmen, architects, designers and engineers work together. Hammers primarily developed the basic artistic and technical concepts. His materials are metal, stone, wood, glass, light and color. In 2011 he founded the forge in Aachen.

In 2012, the collaboration with the painter Rafael Ramírez Máro began in a free artist community . He also works with and for the German artist Kai Althoff .

In 2013 Hammers developed the concert format “Michael Hammers - A Night Before Christmas”, which he started in 2011 with the arranger and keyboardist Andreas Brouwers, into a pre-Christmas musical event. At the 2014 concerts, the star guest was the American singer Angela Workman.
