On March 2, 1993, Hansen founded the Alt-Berliner Kabarett Berliner Brettl , which was founded as ULK (Independent Literary Cabaret) by Fritz Decho , and directed it until his death. Members of the ensemble included Erika Köllinger , Sigrid Grajek and Tilman Lucke. He was also a member and guest of the Berlin cabaret Klimperkasten and other cabaret ensembles. In the 1970s and 1980s he had great success as a pop singer in West Berlin. He wrote the Hertha song (1972) , among others .

The middle initial W in his name does not come from another first name, but is intended to distinguish it from the pop singer Michael Hansen, who is better known in East Germany .

Michael Hansen died on March 15, 2011 immediately after a performance in Berlin. He was buried on April 1st in Cemetery IV of the Jerusalems- und Neue Kirche congregation on Bergmannstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg .

After Hansen's death on April 19, 2011, six ensemble members of the Berliner Brettl were reconstituted as Das Fliegende Brettl .
