Michael I of Eyczing

Michael I. Freiherr von Eyczing (* 1468 in Schrattenthal ; † July 10, 1522 in Wiener Neustadt ) was a member of the Austrian and Bavarian nobility in the Duchy of Austria under the Enns . He became known for his violent end, which went down in history as the "Wiener Neustädter Blutgericht von 1522".

origin

Michael belonged to the von Eitzing family , who lived in what is now the federal states of Bavaria , Upper Austria and Lower Austria in the Middle Ages . He was a son of Stephan von Eyczing and nephew of Ulrich von Eyczing (d. 1460) .

Life

From his brother Martin Freiherr von Eyczing , who was 20 years older than him, he took control of his lands. He received the rule of Retz in 1509 and after the death of his uncle, Baron Oswald von Eyczing, he also received Drosendorf . In 1519 he passed the main loan to his nephew Stephan III.

After the death of Emperor Maximilian I , he was together with Dr. Martin Siebenbürger Leader of the provincial estates of Austria under the Enns, who, together with the City of Vienna, fought against the transitional government set up by the Emperor in his will. They set up a counter-government.

After Ferdinand I , the brother of Emperor Charles V , had taken control of the Austrian lands in 1521, Michael was charged with high treason by Markus Beck on July 10, 1522 together with Johann von Puchheim and Martin Siebenbürger in Wiener Neustadt Executed August 1522. With the exception of the original loan, all goods were confiscated.

Michael had many children. His sons Ulrich and Christoph studied at the university in Vienna . Christoph then came to the emperor's court in Madrid . He used his acquaintance with the emperor to fight for the lost inheritance together with Ulrich IV., Baron von Eyczing.
