Michael Hastings Jay, Baron Jay of Ewelme , GCMG , (born June 19, 1946 in Hampshire ) is a former British diplomat .

education

Jay studied at Winchester College , Magdalen College , Oxford and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London .

Diplomatic career

From 1969 Jay worked at the Department for International Development, where he stayed until 1981. As part of this, he worked for the World Bank in Washington and New Delhi , among others . In 1981 he moved to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office , where he worked as a private secretary. After various other positions in various British authorities, he was finally deployed as British ambassador to France in 1996 . He held this post until 2001.

Other activities and honors

On June 13, 1992 he was accepted as a Companion in the Order of St. Michael and St. George . On 31 December 1996 he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in the knighthood raised. On June 17, 2006 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.

On September 18, 2006, Jay was elevated to the status of Life Peer with the title Baron Jay of Ewelme , of Ewelme in the County of Oxfordshire . Since then he has been a crossbencher in the House of Lords .
