Michael Kanan (* in Boston ) is an American jazz pianist and arranger.

Michael Kanan began playing the piano at the age of seven; at ten came to jazz. One of his teachers was the pianist Harvey Diamond, a student of Lennie Tristano . While studying at Boston College , he performed with Tal Farlow , Lee Konitz , Al Cohn, and Alan Dawson . After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance musician in and around Boston, then moved to New York in 1991 to study with Tristano's student Sal Mosca . He also worked in the New York jazz scene with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel ( Intuit , 1998), Mark Turner , Jorge Rossy Nat Su ( The J.Way , 1997) and as an accompanist for singers; So in 1996 he became a member of the band of the singer Jimmy Scott , toured with him through the USA, Europe and Japan and recorded four albums with him, such as Over the Rainbow (2004).

In 2001 Michael Kanan became the pianist and arranger of jazz vocalist Jane Monheit , with whom he toured, recorded several albums ( In the Sun , 2002, Taking a Chance on Love , 2004) and others. a. appeared on the David Letterman Show. Michael Kanan also works with his own trio and recorded two albums for the Spanish Fresh Sound New Talent label, Convergence (1999) and The Gentleman Is A Dop , with bassist Ben Street and drummer Tim Pleasant . He also recorded the duo album Dreams And Reflections with alto saxophonist Nat Su. He also plays with a trio made up of Eliot Zigmund and bassist Lee Hudson . Currently (2018) Kanan has a trio with Aidan O'Donnell (double bass) and Doron Tirosh (drums). Michael Kaman lives in Brooklyn .
