Artistic work

The mural works by Michael Laube, created towards the end of the nineties, are influenced by color field painting . They show his endeavor to develop a spatial painting. He arranged colors on transparent acrylic glass in three dimensions and did not concentrate exclusively on the spatial color effect as Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko did.

Starting in 2000, his work, based on painting, has been shaped by the exploration of architecture. In this context, among other things, works were created that show representational fragments of architecture. The focus here was not primarily on the spatial theme. Rather, it was about making architecture legible. Michael Laube only followed this direction of development for a short time.

Since 2003 he has created works that have brought a whole new quality to his approach to architecture. In doing so, works were created that not only have the space as their theme, but also completely occupy it. Although these works were created for specific rooms and incorporate architectural references to the respective location, they are always autonomous works. They represent the formal examination of the space. In the work “Raum 9” (2005) Michael Laube created installations which now differ from architecture only in the lack of any functionality and practicality.

Like Donald Judd , in whose tradition the artist's work stands, Michael Laube defined space as his primary area of action. And as with Donald Judd, the works are revealed not least through a change of perspective. Just as the viewer changes his point of view, his perspective on the object, the object changes in its relationship to the viewer.
